SHIPS DELAYED
Greymouth Coal Shortage
Dominion Special Service
GREYMOUTH, August 27.
A serious dislocation of shipping schedules occasioned yesterday by a shortage of coal supplies continued on the Greymouth waterfront today. The Poolta took the available output- of the Strongman and Liverpool mines, but the Rata was unable to obtain any supplies and was not expected to start loading till tomorrow. Normally that ship would have sailed at 10 o’clock last evening, and a delay of at least 48 hours will be occasioned. Meanwhile bar conditions arc not improving. Though the coal cargo of the Kiwitea. bound for AVellington. was reduced bv a quarter in view of the deterioration of the bar. the vessel touched twice to a slight extent when she sailed last evening. In view of the state, of the bar. the low-water depth is now being reckoned as lift, instead of 12ft. as formerly. The Kiwitea was fortunate in clearing the nort. there being a considerable swell today. The Poolta is also being loaded to a restricted draught.
