SWAYING BATTLE IN CHINA

(Received July 30. 9.40 p.m.) CHUNGKING, July 30. A Chinese communique states that the Chinese have completed mopping-up operations ar Leiyang. 40 miles below llengyang. and the southernmost point reached by the Japanese in their drive to split China from the north to the south. The Chinese at Kwangtung have pushed back the Japanese in areas north-west ami north-east of Tsingyun, 40 miles northwest of Canton. The Chinese High Command lias announced tho Japanese capture of Pingstang, 95 miles north-east of Hengyang. The Chinese repulsed 10 separate Japanese attacks on Hengyang and recaptured five strongnoints east of Hengyang. A Chungking message says that after capturing Laifcngshan on July 26 the Chinese arc at present lisrbtinjx in the suburbs of Tengeliung. the main Japanese base on flic .Yunnan front. The Chinese first captured the heights dominatiug Tcngchung and repelled counter-attacks. Several hundred Japanese, were killed and wounded. At Laifengshan large quantities of Japanese equipment were captured,.
