Waikanae Pilot’s First Zero (By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright.’ (Received July’ 30. 9.30 p.m.) KANDY. July 20. Sub-lieutenant Francis Horror, aged 24, a New-.. Zealand naval volunteer reservist, from Waikanae, flying a Corsair fleet tighter, shot down a Zero after the Sabang bombardment. It. was his first encounlel - witli the Japanese. Horror, who was a farmer before the war. said: •’While climbing to intercept enemy aircraft approaching the fleet. I saw two Zeros above us. Ono attacked ns dead head on. and. in .tile ensuing dogfight 1 was able to gel in four bursts. On the third burst, the Zero began smoking, and after another burst: it caught lire properly. During (lie fight I saw tracers appear past my port wing, apparently from the other Zero.”
