Contractors Form An Association
A general meeting of forty-five contractors from all parts of New Zealand supported by many others by correspondence, was held in Wellington when it was unanimously decided to form a New Zealand Earth Moving and Agricultural Contractors’ Association.
A constitution which had been prepared whs adopted by the meeting and signed for registration as an incorporated society. Provision was made in the constitution for the establishment of branches throughout New Zealand wherever required, and arrangements were made for setting up branches in Waikato, Taranaki, Hawke’s Bay, Manawatu, Marlborough, North and South Canterbury, and Southland, forthwith. It was resolved that all steps for the planning of work and general development both of the organization and the industry be taken in full co-operation with the Government, ns it was recognized that power machinery, which had already demonstrated its uses in ninny ways, would be required for the vast field of developmental work available in New Zealand.
The following wore appointed as the first council of the association: Messrs. D. Sloan (Wellington), chairman; G. V. Amor (Taranaki) ; L. Champion (Hamilton) ; G. W. R. Cook (Central Hawke’s Bay) : V. A. Draper (Wellington) ; G. A. Gillett (Wellington); T. D. Lance (North Canterbury); N. E. Margan (Auckland) : 11. 11. McCallum (Marlborough) ; 11. T. Parsons (Wairarapa) : G. B. Saunders (West Const) ; J. Stellin (Wellington) : A. J. Wilcox (Southland) ; and V. IV. Wilson (South Canterbury). A start was made with the establishment of an economic schedule of charges for the various types of machines, which could be employed on an hourly basis.
