THE PROVINCES
Citizens’ Candidates Succeed LABOUR MAYOR HOLDS WANGANUI The marked preference shown in the metropolitan centres for the Citizens ticket was also reflected in the voting 111 the provincial cities and boroughs. In Palmerston North, where the sitting mayor, Mr. A. E. Mansford, was returned unopposed, only Citizens’ representatives were elected to the city council. In Manganui the Labour mayor, Mr. W. .1. Rogers, retained office, but he will preside over a Citizens’ council. The mayors of Hastings and Napier were re-elected, easily defeating their respective Labour opponents, and both the new Napier and Hastings borough councils are antiLabour. Labour candidates also received a severe set-back in the Wairarapa. In the contest for the Masterton mayoralty, Mr. W. Kemp defeated a Labour candidate. , ~ Detailed results are as follows: — PALMERSTON NORTH Mayoralty A. .T*'. (C.) (Returned unopposed.) City Council Walley, J. T. J. (C.) «,««5 Opie, F. G.
