BOWLERS’ WICKETS

Hutt Too Strong For Kilbirnie

COLTS FAIL AGAINST SENIORS

There was a good attendance at the two all-day matches at the Basin Reserve on Saturday staged by the Wellington Cricket Association as a testimonial to Mr. A. Brewer, custodian of the Basin Reserve who is retiring after having held the position lor 30 years. Interest centred in the match between Hutt, winners of the senior competition for the 11)43-44 season, and Kilbirnie, the run ners-up. A strong sun was drying the wicket after the heavy raiu on Friday, and Allen, the Kilbirnie captain, upon winning the toss, had no hesitation in sending the Hutt team to the wickets. It appeared as if the Kilbirnie captain's policy was justified when Hutt had live wickets down for 45 runs. It. W. Stehr, leader of the Hutt team, however, again played a real captain’s knock, and was well supported by Wvnyard, Eden, and Hare, who all ran into the twenties. Stehr hit. one six and seven fours in compiling S 3 which occupied 135 minutes. The Hutt innings closed at 2.40 p.m. for the creditable total of 203. O’Brien, who took live wickets for 40 runs, and Ashenden, who took four for 74, were the most successful of the Kilbirnie bowlers. Tlie Kilbirnie innings was all over in 90 minutes for the inglorious total of 63. Ashenden (26) and O’Brien (15 not out) were the only batsmen to make the semblance of a stand against the bowling of Buchan (four for 9), Muir (three tor 17). aud O'Reilly (two for 29). Buchan finished off the innings by doing the hattrick. his victims being Parry. Butler, and Allen. The Kilbirnie team had to follow on, and at 5.45 p.m.. when stumps were drawn, had 62 runs on for the loss of two wickets. O’Brien being unbeaten with 41 to his credit. Hutt thus won by 140 runs on the first innings. Colts Well Beaten. The match between a team of colts and a senior eleven at the Basin Reserve on Saturday showed that while the younger players have some capable bowlers in their ranks they still have much to learn about batting on a wicket responsive to The senior team, led by E. W. Tindill, had first use of the wicket, but could only total 130 in their first innings, widen closed at the luncheon adjournment at 1 o’clock. Osborn, who hit four fours in running to 51. and EIJ,- who reached 32. were the only batsmen to shape confidently against the right-hand slow spin bowling of R. S. Chailies, a Nelson College lad, who turned the ball both ways in taking live wickets for IS runs off 7.4 overs. The Colts, who were led by R. W. Coupland. the experienced Karori senior player, were all at sea on going to the wickets, and could only total 76 in their first innings against the bowling of Dickinson (three for 21). O’Neill (two for 27), Knapp (three for 13). and Whyte (one for 10). The senior eleven then ran up S 3 for seven wickets, and declared their second innings closed at 4.52 p.m. Ormiston shaped brightly for 36, and Mooney reached 2a. Murray bowled effectively for the Colts in taking four wickets for 33. Poorly as the Colts had shaped with the bat in their first innings, they collapsed on their second visit to the wickets, and the innings was all over in 40 minutes tor •>s O’Neill (four for 5), Dickenson (three for 11), and Whyte (three for o). .took the wickets for the senior team, which thus won by 122 runs.
