AUSTRALIAN ARMY REDUCTION
Men For Food Production
(Received April 9, 10 p.m.) CANBERRA, April 9.
The strength of the Australian Army is to be reduced in the next .12 months by more than 90,000 mon. This was announced by the Army Minister, Mr. Forde. The normal rate of discharge from the army through illness, incapacity or disciplinary causes, has been about 60.000 a year. Further, under a special War Cabinet decision last year, other men are being released at the rate of 20,000 a uear for essential work. Against this release, an aggregate of SO,000 men and between 20,000 and 30.000 youths are going into the army each year on reaching military age. Thus, to reduce the army by 90,000 a year means a considerable increase in the rate of release, and also a big reduction in the rate of intake. Mr. Forde indicated that the need for increased food production was a main reason for the accelerated rate of releases.
