TURKEY’S WAR NEEDS
Decision To Fight Said To Have Lapsed (Received March 24, 7.30 p.m.) LONDON, March 23.
Turkey a month ago decided to go to war beside her ally Britain. The Turkish Government in secret session approved the decision, which lapsed, says the “Daily Express” Ankara, correspondent, because Britain and Turkey disagreed on the material required to make the decision effective. The correspondent explains, “on the authority of one of the leading figures in the Turkish capital,” that the British military mission in Ankara in February said the second front demands prevented Britain and America fulfilling Turkey’s agreed requirements. Turkey waived the agreement and said she would be satisfied with 500 more tanks and 300 planes to defend the straits. The Turkish Parliament, assuming British consent, w§nt ahead with the formal decision in favour of war. The informant said, “We were absolutely willing to fight.” ’ ’
