COUNTER-ATTACK IN BEACH-HEAD
Reported Break Into German Positions
(Received February 22, 1.40 a.m.) LONDON, February 21. Allied tanks counter-attacking in the Anzio beach-head have broken into the German positions, reports Algiers radio. The extent of the advance is not yet known. ’ The British United Press correspondent at Allied headquarters in Italy says “The Allies are now attacking in. the beach-head after the failure of the German attempt to drive us back into the sea. The Germans have not made any fresh attacks for the past two days.” It is emphasized at headquarters that apart from the narrow German wedge into our positions near Carrocetto, which the Allies are now attacking, there has not been any change in our positions round the beach-head perimeter. The beach-head, nevertheless, is still producing some of the fiercest fighting in the whole Italian campaign. The commander of a platoon of American tanks said that the Germans were machinegunning their own men in the beach-head when they thought the men were surrendering too fast.- The correspondent adds that extremely bitter fighting is still going on in and round Cassino.
