CHILDREN FATALLY, BURNED
Fire In Basement Of House Dominion Special Service. AUCKLAND, February 20. Two children were fatally burned in a fire at Pukemiro yesterday. iney were: „ , Peter Allan Jupp, aged five, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Jupp, Pukemiro. Graham Maurice Hilcy, aged -i, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. Hiley, Pukemiro. Shortly after 9 o’clock Mrs. Hiley s child went to the home of Mrs. Jupp to play with Peter Jupp. The two children were close friends, Half an hour later Mrs. Hiley’s attention was called to smoke issuing from the basement or Mrs. Jupp’s house. The basement, had been used for the storage of furniture packing. Mr. D. L. Black, a mine deputy, was also called, and he did splendid work in clearing away the packing and assisting to suppress the fire, which had broken out in the basement. Other men also assisted. A few minutes later both children were brought out from under the house and were found to be severely burned. They were given firsraid treatment and removed to the Waikato Hospital. The child Jupp died soon after admission, and the child Hiley died at 7 p.m. Mr. Jupp recently returned, from overseas and had taken possession of the house, which was not seriously damaged, a few weeks ago.
