AMATEUR ATHLETICS

Air Force Club Champions LEMON’S THREE TITLES

Air Force won the MeVilly Shield for interclu-b competition in senior events at tlie Wellington provincial amateur athletic championships held at the Basin Reserve on Saturday before a good attendance. Air Force secured 65 points. Wellington 47, Kiwi 41. Victoria University College 29 and Base Camp 3. Air Force got eight first places in 19 senior championship events, were, second in live and third in two. Other points-scoring clubs in senior events fared as follows in order of first, second and third pliicings: Wellington, four, tive and eight; Kiwi, three, six and five; Varsity, four, one and two; Base Camp, one second. Championship points were on the basis of six for first, three for second and one for third. Allocating points in junior championship events on the same basis Kiwi got 64 (eight firsts, four seconds and four thirds); Hutt, 43 (four firsts, four seconds and seven thirds); Wellington. 32 (three firsts, four seconds and two thirds); Varsity, 4 (one second, one third). The Hutt showing indicates that there is good junior talent there. Miss Rosomon, Hutt, won three of the four women’s championships. The fields were small, suggesting that the women’s branch of the sport needs much strengthening. Tinies in track events wore not good, but a fairly strong wind handicapped runners. S. G. Lemon (Air Force), the Services champion, formerly of Otago, proved himself outstanding, winning the 100. 220 and 440 yards. A surprise defeat was that of W. H. Nelson, former national junior distance champion, by I. C. McDowall (Varsity). A. R. Geddes (Wellington), the Otago champion and one time British Empire Games representative, was a class above the others in the distance events. He won the mile and three miles with comfort. In the latter he had a 120 yards lead with 440 yards to go, having then lapped one competitor, and he finished full of running to win by 200 yards, the third man being a similar distance back. Silver collected the points for Air Force in the walking events, though he filled second place to another Air Force man in the mile. This competitor, however, was ineligible for a Wellington championship. S. Lay (Wellington) threw the javelin 191 ft. lih„ or 15 feet better than the New Zealand standard. He' has had practically no competitive experience of recent years. Good judges reckon that on Saturday s performance he would not be long regaining the form which gave him a 200feet throw at the British Empire Games, next best to him on Saturday was close to 40 feet behind; the third man nearly 80. Only one competitor qualified with the minimum (sft. 3in.) for the senior high jump, but three juniors beat this. Finally, after a great contest between Dowries (Kiwi) and Roberts (Wellington College), the former won with sft. 61n„ which is an inch better than the New Zealand junior standard. , , In assessing the merit, of Air Forces performance compared with that of the other clubs, it must be taken into account that the service has some good performers from all parts of New Zealand stationed in the Wellington district, while the local clubs have suffered through the loss of men to the services everywhere. A feature of the day was the work of the Wellington Centre officials in keeping the events right up to schedule. Mr. "Dorrie” Leslie was starter. The next Basin Reserve attraction. In which athletics will have a part, is the Interhouse Girls’ Association <Hsptay on March 18, when the Wellington Centre will combine In a programme. Abbreviations used in the results are.
