The Boy senberry

Sir, —It mayTe conceded that the boysenberry, which Mr. Davey is champion ing, is a very good fruit. But what is it going to cost? For it is an exceeding ly strong and persistent grower; even more vigorous than its cousin the blackberry. Mr. Davey’s assertion that it is arbitrary and even frivolous to prohibit the spread of a plant that will assuredly become a pest, because already we have one that has got but of control and laid waste hundreds of acres, is strange reasoning. Because we have one strong enemy we should not hesitate to introduce another. It is to be hoped that the Department of Agriculture will give serious attention to the Waikato Farmers Union request. Already this plant has been distributed fnr and wide, and has found a congenial home in New Zealand. Speed and vigour is essential to retire control, otherwise it too will take churgtlike its übiquitous cousin.—l am, etc., G. AV. DARVALL. Tasman, February 18.

Rural Meat Ration

Sir, —I notice in today's prospectus ol the workings of the meat-rationing scheme that the Minister-in-Charge is prepared to make a special allowance to what he describes as heavy industries, and 1 assume that this is a hint that the miners and timber workers of this country will again be given preferential treatment. There is another special treatment being meted out to rural delivery areas, as the scheme stands at present, which puts them below the basic ration. Owing to our distance from a centre we are charged more than the city or suburban people for our meat, and what would cost a city person 1/9 costs us 2/- to 2/3. This means that each week we will part with meat coupons for what is really a delivery charge. What about an extra issue to cover this? —I am, etc., SCHOOLBOY. Mauriceville "West, February 17.
