Pollett Wins; Shield To Lyall Bay One of the keenest finishes yet seen lu the annual Peek Sr.icld harbour swimming race was witnessed on Saturday at Evans Bay, when P. Pollert, aged 14 (Hutt Club), and J. Carswell (Wellington B). staged a thrilling tussle over the closing 150yds. of the mile and a halt course. Pollett _gaining a slight advantage iu the final 50yds. to cross the judge's line with a little over a yard to spare. The shield, which is competed for by club teams of four, was won by Lyall Bay. The race was swum .over a triangular course. Thirty, of the 60 competitors finished, including five of the six women. One of the largest crowds yet to see this race since its inception attended. A cboppv sea and a water temperature of 60 degrees, made, conditions uncomfortable for the competitors, many withdrawing through cramp and the cold. Fastest time went to J. C. Blakeley. Lyall Bay Club, whose time from scratch was 41.55. A clubmate. D. O’Neil, gained second fastest, his net time being 43.10. The Lyall Bay team which won the shield comprised C. R. Watson, who finished third. D. O’Neil, fourth. H. Dixon, fifth, and J. C. Blakeley, eighth. Maranui A was second, and Hataitai, third.
