1000 LIVES LOST
Allied Troopship Sunk In European Waters
WASHINGTON, February 17. The sinking of an Allied troopship m European waters with the loss of 1000 American soldiers is announced by the War Department. The announcement added tht approximately 1000 were rescued. Substantial numbers of Americans were- aboard the ship, which was lost at night. The date is not disclosed because the enemy presumably does not know the results of the attack. The ship sank rapidly in a heavy sea. The United Press says it was the greatest such disaster of . the war. Not a single American soldier was lost in the last war in a transport sinking.
