BRITISH COAL INDUSTRY
(Received February Iff. 9.30 p.m.) LONDON, February 17. The Minister of Fuel, Major Lloyd George, told the miners’ leaders and the coal-owners whom he met separately that the Government could not ask consumers to shoulder the heavy financial burden of further increasing certain rates of pay since the Porter award of January 22. The Minister added that such increases must be met within the industry.
The miners’ leaders agreed that the miners’ executive would consider the Ministers’ proposal to establish a committee to overhaul the whole wage structure, and the coalowners- agreed to cooperate in any discussions between the 'miners and the owners.
