SPORTS CENTRE
The sports centre in Wakefield Street, Wellington, fitted out at a cost of £oOOO for the entertainment of servicemen, ,s now let to the Air Training Corps at £lo a week. The mayor, Mr. Hislop, told the Wellington City Council last night that soon after the centre was completed circumstances resulted in there being no really effective use for it. A bigger rent than £TS was sought, but if was finally agreed to accept that, plus the gift, of a hut valued at £2OO. So, if the A.T.C. stayed a year in occupation the rent would approximate £2O a week,, taking the value of the. hut into account. If the centre was suddenly required it could be obtained, as the tenancy was only a monthly one. Under special.circumstances it could be reoccupied at less notice. The council and the patriotic committee had each found approximately half the cost" of the centre.
