RAILWAY FATALITY
Dominion Special Service.
NAPIER, February 15. Stated to have been visiting Hastings to attend the funeral of the late Mr. L> J. McLeod, with whom he had been employed at one time, Gathrone Francis Adrian Hardie, Napier, met his death when returning to Napier by the railway last evening. Mr. Hardie, an elderly widower, purchased a single ticket ivr Napier by the mixed train which leit Hastings at 8.12 p.m., and before the train left he was noticed by the guard standing on the carriage platform, lie was advised to go inside the carriage and sit down. When the train reached Tomoana he was missed by the guard. In the meantime at Hastings station a pay of shoes and a cap were found on the line Further investigation revealed, a mail’s body about 25 yards ou the Napier side of the St. Aubyn Street railway crossing. Evidence showedf that he had been dragged a considerable distance. It is assumed that Mr. Hardie slipped from /the train when it started and was dragged to the point where his body was found.
