LITTER IN STREETS
Aftermath Of Parade
A street cleantr’s view on a popular method of showing enthusiasm on occasions such as Monday’s parade of returned servicemen in Wellington was given by a city corporation employee as he made an attempt to sweep up the confetti and paper streamers that covered the surface ot the streets after the parade. “We had no sooner cleaned tip the streets pretty well this morning when this sort of thing occurs.” he said. “They are crying out for the collection of paper at present, yet it seems to me that there is still plenty of paper going to waste. This confetti is a terrible nuisance because no sooner does one sweep it together than a puff of wind blows it away again. Usually water carts are sent out after a show like this to anchor the confetti down, but ioday for some reason there arc no water carts, and it is a difficult matter to clean the streets. The streamers arc not so bad. as they are in long lengths, an*, one can tangle them info balls, but the confetti has a great game with us.” The suggestion was made that, public enthusiasm could very well be expressed without causing so much litter in the streets.
