New Zealand’s Share Of War Relief
“No decision as to New Zealand’s commitment has been made by the New Zealand Government,” said tip) Acting-Min-ister of Finance. Mr. Sullivan, when commenting ' yesterday on the iWashington cable message published on Friday in which the chairman of the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration was reported to have said that New Zealand’s contribution would be 15,000,009 dollars (£4,500,000). Mr. •Sullivan added that though communications had been received from the overseas authorities on the subject, farther details were awaited.
In a broadcast Inst Sunday week Dr. R. M. Campbell suggested that the amount would probably be between £2.000,000 and £3,000,000. Dr. Campbell, who is secretary of the New Zealand High Commissioner’s Office in London, was one of the New Zealand delegates to the relief and rehabilitation conference held at Atlantic City. He said that the conference recommended that the countries participating should contribute 1 per cent, of their national income, which for New Zealand would probably mean between £2,000,000 ami £3,000,000. Even more important than money was the physical production of the goods. It was the intention that 90 per cent, of the money contributed should be spent in buying goods from the contributing country..
