STREET SEALING

Lower Hutt City Council’s Programme

Unsealed streets in central and older areas of Lower Hutt were recently inspected by the works committee of the Lower Hutt City Council. As a result it has been decided that where a street can be rapidly put into condition suitable for sealing with a priming coat, such sealing will be carried out before the coming winter provided that the surface will stand a reasonable number of years before a chipped sealed coat will be necessary. . , .. “The amount o f priming material available is limited and accordingly the council is unable to carry out the amount of settling it would otherwise be able to, said t'lie chairman of the works committee, Mr. W. Streets to receive immediate attention are: East Street, West Street, Nikau Avenue, Wai-iti Avenue, Heath Street, Brook Street, Bristol Square, Boulcott Street, Colin Street, Stevens Street. These streets will use up all the scaling material, but if further priming material can be obtained and the labour position permits the necessary preparatory work to be carried out, further streets may be added to the list, namely: Hineinoa Street, Waitui Crescent, Rodney Street. Guthrie Street, Vincent Street, Marina Avenue. . “The other unsealed streets either require a considerable amount of strengthening work to be carried out before they would be fit to seal, or the traihe is such that a priming coat would not.stand up without an immediate road oil and chip sealing coat,” said the engineer. We have been able to obtain only about one-halt of the required quantity of sealing chips for the programme approved with last year’s estimates, so it will not be Possible to complete that programme, and 1 therefore cannot recommend any additional sealing work which would require use of metal chips.”
