Unfortunately the tide was rather low, and several rocks showed above the water, making it rather difficult for coxswains who were not used to the course. One of the oarsmen in the open fours was Captain Athol Lawson, a well-known member of the 'Star club, who returned from the Middle East m the recent furlough party. The results were as follows:— Maiden Fours.—First heat: Petone No. 1 (Higgins. Balderson. Fowles. Alexander), 1; Star (Johnson. Webb, Stone, Cowles), 2 Star started from the outside position, and though they were hitting It at a fastcr stroke, could not make any impression on Petone. A quarter of a mile from home the crews were almost even, but from then on Petone drew ahead to win by three lengths. Second heat: Wellington <Bollander. Hinchcliffe. Woolcott. Brown),. 1. Petone No. 2 (Lee. Harvey. Norton, Major), o Soon after the start Wellington took the lead, and, rowing very easily, won by two lengths. Second heat: Wellington (Christie. Brown. Milson. Meehan). 1; Star No. 2 (Armstrong. Osten, Surridge, Arney). 2. Bad coxing lost Wellington a lot of ground at. the stare of the race, but they were easily the superior crew, and were coming homo easily by six lengths when they stopped, having mistaken the finishing post..
