The Minister of Defence, Mr. Jones, announced this week that for the year 1944 the number of vacancies for entry as officers in the Royal New Zealand Navy for long service would be as follows':—Naval cadets (executive branch), 3; naval cadet (engineering branch), 1; probationary paymaster sub-lieutenants,

Candidates must have passed the matriculation examination or the school certificate examination, and for cadet; ships must be between the ages of 1< years and 18 years 8 months on December 31, 1944. For entry as probationary paymaster sub-lieutenant candidates must be between the ages of 19 years and 24 years on December-31, 1944. Candidates for entry as probationary paymaster sublieutenant who possessed one of the following qualifications would be eligible for entry without entrance examination: — Degree of Bachelor of Laws; the Degree of Bachelor of, Commerce: or a complete pass in the Accountants’ Professional Examination. The Minister said that his announcement referred solely to candidates who wish to make the Royal New Zealand Navy their career in life, and had nothing to do with.service for the duration of the war only. . A copy of the Regulations tor the entry of officers, showing conditions of service, rates of pay. etc., can be obtained from the Naval Secretary. Navy Office, Wellington, from whom application forms can also be obtained. Applications must reach the Naval Secretary not litter than June 1, 1944. :
