“CHINA GIRL”

(Second week).—Hollywood has yet to produce the really great story of China —always excepting “The Good Earth, which was made when China alone was endeavouring to curb the growing Axis might. What a story there is to be told, but little has yet been attempted. “China Girt” (State) is an entertaining enough film, but it is still not the story of China. Ben Hecht, who can be brilliant when he tries, wrote and directed the film, which deals mainly with an American cameraman (George Montgomery), his pal (Victor AlcLaglen). a lovelv Chinese girl (Gene Tierney. believe it or not), and Lynn Bari, ns Captain Fifi. described in the publicity as a “.curvaceous renegade.” whatever that might be. The Flying Tigprs are featured, too—they are having quite an outing on Wellington’s screens this week! The film has most of its action in Burma with McLaglen, the two-fisted soldier ot fortune, peddling his loyalty to the highest bidder. It is not so long ago that the Hays Office frowned on love between white men and Orientals, but. now that China is an ally. Montgomery is allowed to fall 1n love (and reasonably-enough, too) with the beautiful China Girl.
