RELIEF ABROAD

Contribution By New Zealand U.N.R.R.A. STATEMENT (By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Received February 10, 9.10 p.m.) WASHINGTON, February 9. New Zealand’s contribution to the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration would be 15,000,000 dollars, according to the Assistant Secretary of State, Mr. Dean Acheson, who is chairman of the council of U.N.R.R.A. Australia’s contribution would be nearly 40,000,000 dollars on the basis of 1’ per cent, of its national income.

The United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand would contribute about 450,000,000 dollars, he said. India’s participation had so far not been determined because she came within the special category of an enormously large population compared with the national income.

The method cf payment of the U.N.R.A.A. members’ contributions has not yet been publicly laid down. It has not been stated whether cash transactions with U.N.R.R.A. will be made before the actual export of relief commodities to the receiving areas, or when the members’ first large instalments are to be made available. One per cent, of the national income, mentioned in the above message, is the general agreed-upon basis of assessing contributions. If calculated on the present pegged exchange rate, New Zealand’s share is approximately £4,500,000.
