MEAT RATIONING

Farmers’ Union Consulted

“I would like to make it clear that the rationing controller, Mr. J. E. Thomas, did consult representatives of the Fanners’ Union and the Meat Board,” said Mr. A. B. O’Shea, Dominion secretary of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, in a statement yesterday in connexion with the resolution adopted by a meeting of farmers and stock agents in Dunedin, and published in “The Dominion" yesterday.

“The controller has always endeavoured to see that farmers get a fair deal under the rationing arrangements,” said Mr. O’Shea, “and I atn sure that so far as Mr. Thomas is concerned, every effort will be made to see that farnief’s are in no worse position in regard to the sale of stock than they would be if rationing had not been introduced. An argument hns been proceeding between the Stabilization Commission and producers of beef in the South Island, but this is a matter in which the rationing controller has not been concerned. The details of the rationing scheme have not yet been brought to finality, but. from representations made to him, the controller is aware of the heed for seeing that the introduction of rationing is not used to depress fat stock prices. Producers may rest assured that both the Meat Board and the Farmers’ Union are keeping in touch with the position.”
