OBITUARY

Rabbi S. Katz

The death occurred in Wellington yesterday of Rabbi Solomon Katz, minister of the Wellington Hebrew congregation and senior Jewish minister in New Zealand. , • Rabbi Katz was born in 1884, near Kishinev, Bessarabia, and was educated in a Jewish seminary. He then went to England and continued his studies at the Jewish. Theological Seminary there. His first appointment was as minister to the Coventry Hebrew congregation, and in 1909 he came to Auckland to become junior minister to Rabbi Goldstein. In 1919 he went to the Unified States of America.to study at the Jewish Theological Seminary, New York, where he graduated as rabbi. Subsequently Rabbi Katz accepted calls to congregations at New York City, Birmingham, Alabama, and New Rochelle, New York. After the death of Rabbi Van Staveren, Rabbi Katz was appointed to the Wellington Hebrew congregation.

Rabbi Katz was widely respected for his learning and was a fluent speaker, often addressing congregations of. other denominations as well as the Wellington community generally. He took a keen interest in world affairs and strongly advocated the restoration of Palestine to the Jewes. He was official Jewish chaplain for the U.S. forces in New Zealand. In 1937 he received the Coronation Medal. Rabbi Katz married id 1904, his wife predeceasing him in September last year. He leaves one daughter. Mrs, Sidney Moses, Wellington, and three sons, David Katz, R.A.N., and Nathan and Alfred, New York. Mr. A. G. McFarland The death has occurred of Mr. Andrew George McFarland, acting editor and for more than 20 years chief reporter of the “Herald,” Wanganui, states a Press Association message. Aged 62, he was born in Christchurch and spent more than 40 years working as a journalist in-'Feild-ing,.- Palmerston North, Wellington, Askburton and Wanganui. For a time he was on the staff of. the Press Association cable station at Wakapuaka. He leaves a widow, four daughters and oue son.
