RECEIVING OF RING

Charged with stealing a diamond and ruby ring valued at £lO, and alternatively with receiving it knowing jt to have been dishonestly obtained, William Clark, labourer, aged 28, was acquitted by a jury in the Supreme Court, Wellington, on Monday of theft but convicted of receiving. The owner of the ring was a resident of a Wellington hotel, and the ring was missing after her bedroom had been broken into. Accused was alleged to have given it as a pledge for a loan. His explanation was that he had bought it from a sailor in an hotel. Accused gave evidence and admitted previous convictions for theft. The jury was out 18 minutes. The Chief Justice (Sir Michael Myers) remanded prisoner till today for sentence. The Crown Prosecutor, Mr. W. H. Cunningham, conducted the prosecution and Mr. W. J. Staecy appeared for accused.
