JAIL FOR DEFAULTER

Escape From Detention Dominion Special Service. PIAiLMERSTON N., February 9. Charged with wilfully escaping from a defaulters’ camp at Shannon, Winston Andrew Boag, printer, aged 31, Blenheim, appeared before Mr. Lawry, S.M., in the Magistrates’ Court today. He pleaded guilty. An application was made by Sir. A. J. Hendry, detention officer at the camp, that Boag be ordered to serve in prison the remainder of the detention period. The magistrate sentenced Boag to three months on the charge of escaping. In regard to tbe order to be detained in prison, Mr. Lawry told accused that he had been sentenced to serve in a detention camp because be would not do military duty. If his escape was known to other defaulters in the camp, it might have a detrimental effect on the other men if he were sent back there. There was a risk that he might urge others to try to escape. In making the order. Mr. Lawry said he had no option. If accused behaved himself, he could apply for his return to the detention camp after a period in. prison.
