EASY TRACK FOR SECOND DAY

Variation In Exposed Form Likely (By St. Simon.) Kain which set in at Trenthain on Wednesday night continued yesterday morning and fell steadily during training opciations from 5 a.m. till about 8 u.lll- - eased- The raintali tor 24 hours up till 'J a.m. yesterday was 29 points and from I) a.m. til! 5 p.ni. yesterday a fli ythe i •10 points were registered. AN Un tniecqnartors of an inch in 30 hours and Py°*“ peels of further, rain last night, the tracks at Trentham will be substantially cased for Ibe second day of the Wellington meeting tomorrow, anti this may result in considerable variation in tirst day form, specially on the part of horses who were unable tn io their best on the tirst day ou account 01’ soreness. Descended From JEulogy* For sheer speed the performance that was given by Subdued in winning the Wellington Stakes last Saturday will be long remembered by those who were present at Trentham. She displayed amazing iniec over the flrst .wo furlongs and ran right away from her opponents, giving them .to chance at all. Subdued is unbeaten in four starts and she is undoubtedly one of the fastest two-year-olds the Dominion has produced in recent years. The success of Subdued draws attention to the fame that has been brought to the Koatanui' Stud by the imported mare Eulogy, one of the gems of the New Zealand Stud Book. Eulogy was a successful winner-producer, and "her daughters and grand-daughters are following in her footsteps. She was imported to the Dominion by Mr. G. M. Currie when she was a young mare about 1913, and she has founded a family renowned for its brilliance. Eulogy is a member of the No. 22 family and she was bred in 1911 by Cicero (son of Cyllene), from Kellbia, by Upas from Goletta, by Galopin. Subdued is a great grand-daughter of Eulogy, being by Ringmaster, son of Colorado, from Submission, by Llmond from Homage, iby Absurd from Eulogy. Among tlie early progeny in New Zealand of Eulogy were Hiimibug and Epitaph and they will be remembered by racing men as two-year-olds of the highest class. As a two-yettr-old Epitaph won seven races on end and was unplaced only once in 11 starts. That Epitaph .possessed ability well above the average was proved beyond doubt when she carried 1.0.3 and won a two-year-old handicap at Ellerslie and ran the five furlongs in GO 3-5. It is doubtful whether any two-year-old filly has ever given a better performance In a handicap in New Zealand'than that. Subdued is adding further lustre to the record of the familj’ and she has phenomenal speed, though she is not the size and physique of Epitaph, who threw a lot to her sire Absurd.

Contemporaries, In view of tho fact that yearlings by Coronach sold excentionally well on tue first day of the national yearling sales it is interesting to recall that Subdued’s grandsire Coloiado, and Coronach were contemporary as racehorses in England and they were champions. Coronach was a great galloper -who scored a remarkable easy victory in the Derby, In which Colorado was only third. Colorado, however, beat Coronach on several occasions, as a tliree-year-old in the Two Thousand,Guineas and as a four-year-old in the Princess of Wales Stakes and in tho Eclipse Stakes. Brom a Good Family.

The three-year-old Foxstar, a candidate for the Trial Plate at Trentham on Saturday, belongs to a good family, being by Foxbridge from Astarth, by Chief Ruler from Hyades, dam of Ammon Ra, Profiles and Phaola. Up to the present Fdxstar has not had a great deal of racing, but he has been placed twice and slight improvement upon his running on the first day, when he finished a close sixth in the Apprentices’ Plate, would give him good prospects in the Trial Plate. Hus the Speed. Tamaitl Pai, an acceptor for the Trial Plate at Trentham on Saturday, was a runner in the Wellington Stakes last week when he dwelt badly at the barrier and was always behind the speedy two-year-olds in the field. He is a three-year-old gelding by Hunting Song from Poi Dance and he showed a lot of speed when he was in training in Auckland as a two-year-olil after which he was sold and transferred to Hawke's Bay. Tamaitl Pai is inclined to be a trifle wayward. Son of Revelation.

Up to the present there have not been many of the stock of Revelation racing, but one among them who has made a good impression is Black Simon, winner at his fourth start of the Juvenile Handicap, five and a half furlongs, at Awapuni. In the meantime Black Simon has trained on satisfactorily and he may bo one to add interest to the Nursery Handicap, though he will meet a better field than lie beat at Awapuni. Blnck Simon was not a runner last Saturday.

Performed Creditably. Though they were unable to provide any serious opposition to the flying filly Submission, Ciilals aud Bridge Acre performed creditably In the Wellington Stakes. Thev should haie better prospects in the Nursery Handicap tomorrow when there will be no Submission in the field. Colais is a fine big colt iby Coronach, and Bridge Acre, winner at Riccarton in November, is a neat black filly 'by Foxbridge. Not ISlijjlble. . Te Awe Awe was not weighted tne hack events she was entered for at the Pahlatua meeting as she was not eligible. Having won than £5OO in stakes, she Is now in open company. Electric Tote nt Taranaki. The Taranaki Jockey Club will use the portable electric totalizator for its cup moding to be held nt New Plymouth in February.

No “Frees” at Otalii. The Otakl Maori Racing Club is the latest in the Wellington district to abolish the issue of complimentary tickets for its summer meeting in February.

Out for tlie Season. Golden Barb, the ■ two-year-old lintrsisler by Golden Engle to Taurangl, who was twice thir’d in her four races this season. the lust of which was in the Fltzherbert Handicap on Saturday, will not race again till she is a three-year-old. She goes to her owner’s property at Tuhitarata at the end of tlie week, and in her place J. P. Ryan will take home the filly, by Foxbridge from My Own, who is a halfsister to Yours Truly and Caithness. Both fillies were purchased at the yearling sales last year by Mr. J. Jameson, Masterton, ’ / inconsistent

John Gay, winner of the Telegraph Handicap, is earning a reputation for inconsistency. lie collapsed at the end of five furlongs in the Stewards’ Handicap in November and then nil but win the Members’ Handicap over seven furlongs on the second day, being (.'aught in the last stride by 'Scottish Dale. At his last start (at Invercargill) before coming to Trcntliant to win the Telegraph Handicap ho gave an indifferent, display, finishing out of n place in the Flying Handicap, won by Monelar.v. .Tolin Gay is engaged hi the Metropolitan Handicap, seven furlongs, »t Trcntbam this week, lie won the race last year, lending all the way and returning a big dividend.
