Rinks At Dominion Bowling Tourney

FEW TEAMS UNBEATEN

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, January 19. The rinks competition at the national bowling tourney advanced to a more interesting stage today, when the. filth and sixth games of the series of eight were completed under perfect weather conditions. The greens were fast and lively. The number of unbeaten combinations was substantially reduced. A heavy downpour occurred at the end ot the day. In many cases the games brought togethei some of the most prominent players id the Dominion. , , , , , , At the end of the sixth round only six teams remained unbeaten and there were a further 32 which suffered only one loss. Following are the skips of the rinks which have won all their games: P. Munn (Cantcnbury), J. McGrath (Alexandra), T. Riach (Taierl), S. Hutchison (Caledonian), O Grant (Invercargill), and L. Morrison (Waihopai, Invercargill), A. V. Keast (Te Bang!), J. F. Smith (Temuka), D. Haswell (Blenheim), A. W. Macdonald (Balmacewen), J. C; Tapliu (Auckland Transport), T. A. McClymout (Ponsonby), B. S. McNish (Canterbury), H. Wilson (Mt. Eden), C. E. Tyrrell (Roslyn), J. Stoddart (Kaikorai), B. Hayworth (Canterbury), W. Purdle (St. Clair), F. L. Taylor (Kaituna), B. A. Barnsdale (Christchurch), M. J. Squire (Hawera), J. Veitch (Dunedin), C. A. McDonald (NorthEast Valley), J. Ure (North End. Invercargill), W. A. Britten (Sydenham), K. S. Ewing (Stratford), J. H. Armstrong (Leith), J. S. Anchor (Hamilton), H. B. Kay (Shirley), and C. Spearman (Christchurch R.S.A.). Henshaw (Ashbury) suffered his first loss at the hands of Bain (Marlborough B. 21-15. This was Bain’s fourth win.

Haswell (Blenheim) also had to submit for the first time to Barham (Caversham), who won 23-18. Wilson (Mt. Eden) went down 27-20 to Donald (Te Bangij. Deare (Carlton) came to light to score his third win Balch (Winton) lost for the first time to Taplin (Auckland Transport), who registered the decisive margin of 86-13. Coulter (North-East Valley) and Stoddart (Kaikorai) were both undefeated on one green and both went down in their fifth game.

Ewing (Stratford) a consistent performer, was beaten by Britten (Sydenham), 27-11. Squire (Hawera) also went down to Barnsdale (Christchurch) 28-25. On the Caledonian green, fours skipped by a number of past champions were engaged. After a close struggle, B. A. Barnsl dale’s (Christchurch) rink beat M. J. Squires’ (Hawera) four 28-25. Barnsdale's four beat W. Bremner (Auckland) yesterday and won their sixth game against S. .C. K. Smith (North End, Invercargill) by 27-20. Bremner stopped Veitch's winning run by 32 to 22. The match-winning factor in this game was the play of W. E. Oughton, Bremner’s lead. Bremner won four games. P, Munn's (Canterbury) champion four has won all its matches., none by a smaller margin than seven points. Other fours that have played very consistent bowls are A. V. Beast’s (Te Bang!) four and the Temuka team skipped by J. E. Smith, each of which won both games today. B. Haworth's (Canterbury) four met its first reverse in the sixth round at the hands of the Edendale team skipped by G. H. Smith. With six ends played Haworth was down 9-2, and though the margin was reduced, the country rink won by 27-25. Smith lost only two games in. his section. H. Wilson (Mt. Eden) was beaten by Hugh Donald (Te Bangi) by 27-20, and this was the Auckland skip’s only defeat in his section.

Fours which have won all their games Include the Invercargill team skipped by O. Grant. The Alexandra four skipped by J. McGrath, in spite of lack of tournament experience, has given an excellent account of itself and has won six games to date. The Kaituna rink skipped by F. L. Taylor, the ex-Onehunga player, beat W. Spurdie (St. Clair), 23-18, in the fifth round, and suffered its only loss at the hands of the Pukekohe team skipped by W. J. Short, secretary of the Franklin Racing Club, the score being 26-18; C. Spearman (Christchurch R.S.A.) leads in his section with five wins, but was pressed all the way in the sixth round by G. C. Clarldge (St. Kilda), a close and exciting match being won by Spearman by 20-25. J.Mingine (Onehunga) scored well In both games, defeating Chatfield’s (Edgeware) four 36-25, and Taylor. (Sydenham) 33-13. S. HutcMson (Caledonian) won both his games by good margins, and he, S. Riach (Taierl) and L. J. Edwards (Balclutha) have each won six games. D. Hupter (Petone), who won five games in Hutchison’s section, was’a comparative novice when he led for J. W. Lowry in 1037 at Wellington, and they won the pairs title. In Hunter’s present Petpne rink Lowry is third. Section play in the fours will be completed with two rounds tomorrow, and post-section play will begin op Friday.
