This was not so however, for a passing couple on a motor cycle noticed their plight and without hesitation took the car, an old model, in tow. For 12 miles the crippled ear was pulled along by the straining motor-cvelc. AVhen the foot of the Iximutaka hill was reached the couple dropped the tow, sped over the hill and down to their home in Upper Hutt, got into their car. a modern vehicle, and drove back to tiie assistance of the youths who were waiting at Featherston. The helpless car was pulled slowly up steep Rimutaka hill and down to Upper Hutt, a distance of 19 miles. Once the chain parted and in a trice it had whipped under the wheel of the second car, a shower of sparks rising as the tyre was considerably burnt and the chain became almost red hot. From Upper Hutt the crippled car was towed to Petone by a truck which had been to Carterton and back looking for it.
