WELLINGTON COLLEGE PRIZE-GIVING

Headmaster’s Report

“The impact of present conditions in the school has naturally been considerable, but it is gratifying to report that, through the special effort ot all concerned, we have had a .satisfactory year ot school work and -school activities said the headmaster of Wellington College. Mi. E N Hogben, at the annual prize-giving of the college yesterday afternoon. Tbe school opened with a roll of 68-1 and this number had been well maintained This meant that, most boys were completing a satisfactory course. ’ f this is done the iudmdual will not bt. penalized and the community will benefit, for we must bear in mind that we are fighting not only for the present victory but also for future peace, said Mr. Horben “In the preparation lor this our” schools have an important part to to tbe growing Im nd of old boys serving with the forces. Mr. Hogben said it was difficult to ensure completeness of records, but figures available were:—Old boys on service 11 <0; awarded decorations 61 ; missing, believed killed 30; killed in action 103. “In our hearts we revere the memory of these men,” he said. Tbe introduction of accrediting next year and the establishment ot. the school certificate as a mark of satisfactory school course would involve certain changes in the curriculum and reorganization hi courses, and he hoped to have an opportunity on another occasion of discussing them with parents. After paving a tribute to the stair. Mr. Hogben addressed the boys. “The school has tried to give you some of the things that are really worth while, and you in return have given much to the school, he said*. “Some of you will, this afternoon, be finishing your school career, and our interest will go with you in all that you undertake. You have heard me sneak on several occasions on intellectual alertness, the realization of loyalties and the power of discipline, and I would uige vou to keep these ideals ever before you. I remind you of the words used by Mr. Duff-Cooper in Chnstcnurch two years ;i"o He perhaps summed up our ideals in this phrase: ‘These are great days if we are worthy of them. ~ .
