RAILWAY REPAIRS

East Coast Line

The railway service which was interrupted by a ‘landslide at Waikokopu, south of Gisborne, a fortnight ago, should be resumed before the end of this week. Great difficulty was experienced in the repair work because a large area of the cliff had fallen away and 360 feet of rails was left swinging in the air, while a stream of water from th e excavation also hindered operations. There will be heavy tralhc on the line from the end of the week to the end of next week in catering for visitors to the Alaori Victoria Cress ceremony at Ruatoria and repair work was pushed ahead \t-ith all haste. The Governor-General. Sir Cyril Newall, will arrive on Saturday night, and stay at Gisborne over tlio weekend. The Victoria Cross awarded posthumously to Second-Lieutenant Al. K. Ngarimu will bo presented to. his parents. Special trains carrying visitors are expected on Sunday and Wednesday of next week. During the past 10 days train passengers have been transferred by a six-mile road detour constructed since the interruption of tlie railway service.
