MEMORIAL TO MR. BRIAN PHILLIPS

Kauri Planted In Reserve At Eastbourne

Possibly the first such ceremony to. be performed in the Dominion in connexion with the present war took place at Eastbourne on Saturday afternoon. It was the planting of a kauri tree .to the memory’ of Brian George Phillips, who lost his life on active service in. Egypt last year. The ceremony was conducted by the mayor of Eastbourne, Mr. W. Wise, the site being at the entrance gate to the borough reserve. In his address •the mayor paid tribute to the high esteem in which Mr. Phillips was held. At the time of his departure for overseas he was a member of the Eastbourne Borough Council, secretary of the Eastbourne Bugby Football Club and associated with the tennis, cricket and social clubs. He was a public-spirited young man who did not spare himself in furthering many activities at Eastbourne. The ceremony was held prior to the start of the last football match-of the club’s season, at which the mayor said, Mr. Phillips was always present. The tree would have a suitable surround which would carry a memorial plate. In addition to relatives and friends, there was a large representation of the legal profession (of which Mr. Phillips was a member), commercial houses, sports bodies and societies from other districts.
