Important Gain In Italy STRONG ATTACK ON NAPLES LONDON, September 28. The most important news contained in today’s communique from Allied headquarters at Algiers is that the Eighth Army has captured Foggia. The communique states that the enemy casualties in the fighting before its capture were considerable. The importance of this capture is emphasized because the most important air installation in .southern Italy, a made airfield and 12 satellite landing grounds have passed into our hands as well as an important rail and road centre.

On the Salerno sector, the communique states, our troops have advanced and captured limited objectives. A correspondent at Allied headquarters says that we have advanced miles in the hills north of Salerno and can now look down on the town of Nocera. The Germans still hold high ground on one flank, but our troops are attaching them there.

The American troops have captured a town 20 miles north-east of Muro. / ’ The Fifth Army is throwing in tanks in support of a strong attack launched on Naples, while Allied warships which,according to Berlin reports moved yet>; terday from Salerno Bay to the Gulf of Naples, are shelling the enemy on land, says Vichy radio. Morocco radio says that the Allies in a sudden thrust supported ■ by tanks stormed important enemy position's north of Salerno.

The Columbia Broadcasting System’s Algiers correspondent says that capturing several key positions in the mountainous north-eastern sector of the Salerno front, the Fifth Army units are reported to have outflanked some of the German troops defending Naples. Tunis radio says that an Algiers spokesman said the initiative in the battle for Naples is firmly in our hands, and the Germans are being continually pushed back.
