FIRST OF ITS KIND

Believed to be the first of its kind so far established in New Zealand, a hostel for the use of service women on leave in Auckland was blessed by Bishop Liston, Roman Catholic' Bishop of Auckland, and officially declared open by the mayor, Mr J ‘A. C. Allum, at a ceremony on Saturday. The hostel has been sponsored bv the Catholic Services Club and been built with funds provided by the club. It has accomodation for 32 service tvomen who will be under the charge of military orderlies during their stay. The canteen and lounge will be made use of also by members of the Catholic Youth Movement, which has an office on the second floor of tlie building.

Garden Fete at Silverstream. Tlie Sisters of Compassion extend a cordial invitation to friends and to the general publie to attend their garden fete at: Silverstream on Saturday, October 2, at 2.15. The train leaves Wellington at 1.22. The Trentham military band will ■play. Visitors will be able to buy homemade goods and afternoon tea will be served. The fete is being' held to augment funds for the proposed building extensions.

Room of Their Own. . Some place they could call their own, where they could talk and. rest, was needed for New Zealand servicemen who were in Wellington visiting hospital for treatment, said Mrs. M. H. Chatfield at a meeting of the Women’s Social Progress Movement in Wellington yesterday. It was true that tjicre were several clubs for Allied servicemen, but having talked with some of .the men. (Mrs. Chatfield said she felt they would appreciate a room which would be for them alone.
