SIR APIRANA NGATA
•38 Years In House Sir Apirana Ngata relinfluishes his seat in the House of Representatives after nearly 3$ years’ membership for Eastern Maori. He was first elected in December, 1005, and since the retirement ■ of the late Sir Thomas Wilford in 1030 to become High Commissioner in London had enjoyed the unofficial title of “Father of the House,” which is bestowed on the member with the greatest number of years of unbroken service. Sir Apirana was born at Kawakawa, -near East Cape, in 1874. and educated at Te Ante College and Canterbury University College. He graduated master of arte and bachelor of laws, and was admitted as a barrister and solicitor in 1890. He has been a member of many organizations concerned with the welfare of the Maori people and; in Parliament, has held several Ministerial posts. Other activities include membership of the New Zealand University Senate. He was knighted in 1927.
