Saturday’s poll is the third in which New Zealanders on war service overseas have voted. A special poll was held in April, 1919, independent of the Parliamentary election. There were only two issues, continuance and prohibition with compensation, a bare majority to decide. The result in New Zealand was prohibition 246,104, continuance 232,208—a majority of 13,890 for prohibition. The Expeditionary Force vote was continuance 31,981, prohibition 7723. The majority favourable to prohibition was turned into one of 10,362 adverse to it.

Simultaneously with the Parliamentary election in December, 1919, a poll was held on the three issues shown on Saturday’s ballot paper. The Expeditionary Force result was continuance 887, .State control 579, prohibition 278. The verdict, of the country was adverse to prohibition by a majority of 2074. The soldier vote increased this figure to 3202.

RESTORATION ISSUE AT

INVERCARGILL

(Bv Telegraph.—Press Association.l . INVERCARGILL, September 27. The number of votes still to fee counted in tho poll on the local liquor question in Invercargill is 2600. including 1440 soldiers’ votes. If restoration is to be carried about 2000 of the 2600 Will have to be in favour ol’Jhat issue. At present restoration is 561 short of a threefifths majority. The result of the soldiers’ votes on the liquor question has not yet been received from Wellington. Absentee and postal votes will be dealt with during the ollieial recount and included in the final totals. The result of the official recount should be known about the end of the week.
