FIGHTING ALONG DNIEPER
Advance Toward Gomel (Received Septemsfir 26, S p.m.) LONDON, September 25. Admissions by Berlin radio yesterday that the Russians were attempting to cross the Dnieper at the confluence with the Desna about one mile from Kiev and that the Kuban had Anally been lost and was bejng evacuated provided some of the highlights of another day’s tremendous Russian successes. A Moscow communique tonight says that the Red Army on the Dnepropetrovsk sector today captured Petrlkovka, 22 miles north-west of Dnepropetrovsk, and on the Kremenchug sector advanced 10 to 13 miles and occupied Kobeliani, which is 30 miles east of Kremenchug, also 120 inhabited placesThe Russians on the Kiev sector captured the town of Brbvary, .10 miles cast of Kiev, and on the Gomel sector advanced 10 to 13 miles and captured Klinsky, 60 miles north-east of Gomel, and also 350 inhabited places. The troops north-west of Smolensk advanced 21 to four miles and captured more than 60 inhabited places, including Dubrovka. Dnieper Bank Battle. The “Red Star” reports that fighting is going on along the eastern bank of the Dnieper, for 40 miles, south-east of Kiev.
Berlin radio’s military commentator, Captain Sertorius, stated yesterday that the Russians attempted to cross the Dnieper at the confluence of the Pripct River, 50 miles north of Kiev. He added: “Based on the tremendous river barrier, the Gorman armies will regroup, partly in front of the barrier and partly behind it. “It is by no means certain that the (Herman High Command will allow the enemy to approach the Dnieper at all points before showing what can bo done by combined modern military technique and the exploitation of ground conditions which are excellent for a defence strategy ”
