FIRST, REAL TEST Three-Year-Olds In G.N. Guineas (By St. Simon.) The first real test of three-year-old strength lor the current season will be in the Great Northern Guineas at the Auckland Racing Club’s spring meeting nr. Ellerslie on October 9. The field indudes Balfron, Royal Heir, Grey Salute and Sir Dink, the four place-getters in the Avondale Guineas. Newcomers to the season’s classics are Expanse the slowdeveloping half-brother by Bulandshar to Defaulter; Sweet Biscuit, one of the leading two-year-old fillies last season: "* r - Rosa, a half-brother by Mr. Standfast to Lou Rosa, who has been given plenty or time to develop; and Constitution, who has already won a handicap race this season in a manner suggesting that he possesses stamina. These, and others who may have their best form to show, should-. prove capable of putting Balfron to the test, a sterner test that he was subjected to by his few opponents in the 'Avondale Guineas. Good Buying. , ~ T Mr. A. J. Court bought both Lord Chancellor and Balfron as yearlings at Trentham, paying 525gns. for Lord Chancellor and WlOgns. for his stableinate. He says his biggest win in one day was £2300 and bis biggest loss £llOO spread over a seven days’ carnival. Among the winners at Rosehill (New South Wales) last Saturday was the New Zealand-'bred gelding Omapo, who is raced by Mr. V. P. Bernard, formerly of Wellington. Following several defeats, Omapo opened at double figures, but there, was confident support for him. and he finished up third favourite at good odds, though several ■ points below opening price. The race was a highweight and Omapo won comfortably. Levin at Otalti.

The Levin Racing Club has been granted permission to hold its spring meeting on November 20 at OtaM. Two-Year-Olds Transferred. The Foxbridge—Bay of Islands colt. Erolefort—Karlova colt, Musketoon —Lady Briefly filly, Lang Bian—Araunette filly and Revelation—Lone Flier colt bought at the January sales on behalf of Major Robertson, Bombay, were transferred this week to the ownership of Messrs. V, Rosenthal and F. G. Travers. Bombay. They are being trained in New Zealand for their owners and will race here as two-year-olds. The new owners have registered the colours light blue, white arm band, scarlet cap.

Filly by Coronach. The dual Railway Handicap winner, Bronwen, has foaled a filly to Coronach and is to be mated with Neptune. Installed at Awapuni.

H. Griffith, Hastings, took over the stable formerly controlled Iby L. G. Morris, at Awapuni, on Thursday. Easy Tiiuo for St. Leon. The Leighon gelding St. Leon, who won a trial event in impressive style at the Avondale meeting, is having an easy time at present and is not to- race again till November. v

Tuning Un. , , . Battledress, the best three-year-old of his year,' but a failure last season. Is in •work again at Hawera. His exercise is confined to pace -work finishing up •with a short sprint and in this he is doing nicely again. First of the Season. Route .March. a member of the powerful team trained at Takanini by F. Smith, is to have his first race of the season at Paeroa next week. Route March was one of the first of Smith’s team to come into work in the late winter and is not likely to be backward.

A T.ong Absence. Spliced, who is entered for the Hawkes Bav meeting next week, has not raced since the Stratford meeting in January, 1942. He is now a five-year-old and is ■trained by 11. Dulleu for Mr. W. S. Glenn. A Blank Year. I . ChokObore Hodge, where the Clifford -Estate horses are trained, will not be reresented in either the Dunedin Guineas ■or McLean Stakes at the Dunedin spring meeting. The stable has a fine record in these races, having won the McLean Stakes nine times, and the Guineas 10 times.

Preparing for Trenthajm, Kevin, winner at Ashburton, is being prepared to race at the South Canterbury meeting next month, and will then come on to Trantham for the Wellington October meeting. He is owned by Mr. K. J. Murnhy. a steward of the Wellington Racing Club. From the Right Quarter. A private messgae from Melbourne states that The Joker has been backed substantially from the right quarter for his Melbourne Cup engagement, both straight out and in doubles, and he is firming in the market for the two cups—Melbourne and Caulfield. The two cups double has been accomplished twice in recent years—by The Trump in 1937 and Bivette in 1239. Patient Treatment. Irish Note, a three-year-old gelding by Irish Lancer from Half Note, by Paper Money from Pink Terrace, an Oaks winner, attracted notice by his forward showing at Orari, and is likely to do good service for F. A. Roberts, who holds him. under lease from H. A. McDonald. Irish Note can boast plenty of size and has not been hurried. Winner by Guarantee. .
