DNIEPER FIGHT MAY BE WAR’S BIGGEST
Force 10 Miles From Kiev LONDON, September 24.. In their advance along the 400-mile Dnieper battlefront the Red Army is now only eight miles from Dnepropetrovsk and, on unofficial reports, less than 10 miles from the city of Kiev. Moscow correspondents state that the battle for the Dnieper crossings may be the biggest of the war in Russia. German reports admit that the Axis forces are getting out of the Kuban bridgehead, saying that heavy equipment and important installations are being evacuated. DENUDING COUNTRY LONDON, September 24. The swiftness of the Russian advances has prevented the deportation of thousands of inhabitants. Everywhere along the front the Red Army is encountering columns of peasants herded ■ to the side of the roads along which the Germans retreated. The Germans poured fuel over the grain fields and fired them, they polluted wells by throwing in the carcases of cats and dogs, and oven the bodies of executed peasants.
