WHO IS DESPICABLE?
EXTRACT from “Dominion,” Wellington, Thursday, September 23,1943. The Leader of the National Tarty (Air. Holland), speaking in Wellington last night, said:— “I think for a public man deliberately to misquote another is despicable. The other day, Mr. Semple took two words from the end of one sentence and three words of the next sentence in Hansard and made me say : ‘Social Security. It is lunacy.’ I absolutely denv I ever said that. ’ No reference was made to Hansara. That is how Mr. Holland side-steps. The reference was from the Christjh of WW® that paper was not mentioned). Heie is the actual report from Christchurch “Press” of 29/9/1938, Page 10:— (Report of Speech by Air. S. G Holland) “HEALTH AND SECURITY,” “THE GOVERNMENT'S PLAN.” “ATTACK BY AIR. S. G. HOLLAND.” Air Holland actually denounced it for over one hour. Then follows the disputed quotation regarding “Applied Lunacy.” “Air. Savage says his scheme is ap* plied Christianity; I say, on the present basis, it is applied lunacy; it we embark on a scheme like this without the fullest inquiry.” That is word for word—no two words here and three words there. And Air. Holland says in Thursday’s “Dominion”: “I absolutely deny I ever said that.”- Now Air. Holland has never made any inquiry, but he pledges himself to administer what hitherto he condemned and referred to as "Applied lunacy.” Who is despicable? AA ha t reliance could anyone place on a wouldbe leader like that? For security and progress—vote Labour .agaifl.raAfl.vL
