THE PEOPLE’S BREAD

WHAT MR. HOLLAND SAID. The following excerpt from Hansard of the proceedings of July 3, 1940, is illuminating:— Mr. Fraser: "Does the Hon. Member for Christclitirch North object to the subsidy (paid to keep bread' prices down) or does lie (Mr. Holland) say that the farmers in Canterbury are getting too much?” Mr. Holland: “No; but the consumer should pay.” Mr. Fraser: “Does the Hon. Member say the consumer should pay more for bread?” Mr. Holland: “Yes. that is right.” Labour has by judicious use of subsidies (as in Britain) kept down the price of bread. Labour lias increased Hie weight of the loaf. ! Every purchaser of bread now has Hie legal right (o demand and receive a two-pound loaf. For the much-discussed “split loaf” the Labour Government’s standard specifications actually increased Hie weight, to a minimum of one pound twelve ounces. The plain, indisputable truth is that in the past only certain types of loaves were sold as two-pound loaves, and such is the case today—but the average weight of ail shapes of loaves sold, including “fancy” bread, as ti result of “standards.’’ is higher today than ever.

There lias been no misrepresentation by Ihe Labour Government because Hie Regulations controlling the sale of bread state that the classes, shapes, and weight of bread sold must be displayed in (he shop. There has been misrepresentation by the National Party, who have attempted to distort facts, and who. on Mr. Holland's admission. would be willing lo make the consumer pay more. No one can honestly vote for a party which bases its ease on misrepresentation. Vote Labour again!—Advt.
