HOT-WATER BOTTLES
Manufacture In New Zealand Reference to a paragraph which appeared in "Tlie Dominion” last Fridav to the effect that many purchasers of New Zealand-made hot waler bottles were dissatisfied, and were returning tin bodes to the retailers, wits made yesterday by the manager of Paratex (1938), J.ld.. Mr. D. L. Irwin, in the following stat einenl: — "When you state that an attempt was made to manufacture lint water hotties you seem to suggest an unsatisfactory result. As a matter of fact, this company made 60,000 hot water bottles last year, and in all since commencing operations has manufactured 1(10.000. This cannot in any way be dubbed an attempt. Your paragraph further states that manufacture has been discontinued and the whole tenor of the statement suggests Hint discontinuance was due to an unsatisfactory attempt. This is, too, contrary to fact. We have been striving for some lime now to get a permit to manufacture bottles for next winter, but so far have been unsuccessful. But for this relatively unimportant factor we should now be in production. “Tin? subject of rejects is a very serious one in hid water bottle manufacture, and must always be a cause of some dissatisfaction. Fully 50 per cent, of all claims for replacement tire fictitious and unjustifiable, arising out of damage caused by the user of the bottle. There is no escape from this position. Tlie claims that have arisen from Hie loeaily-made bottles have been no higher in the past twelve months than they wer# previously with imported bottles and lhe suggestions in your paper are totally unfounded. “As far as we are aware all legitimate ciaims for replacement have been met, but there must obviously come a time beyond which the manufacturer cannot consider further claims. The actual figures obtained from one distributor nre: Supplied, 70.000 bottles; rejects, less than 1 per cent.”
