Mr. Nash’s Broadcast
Sir, —Why is it that some of our politicians apparently deliberately leave out factors affecting the points they wish to emphasize in their election speeches? Surely the public is entitled to frankness. I listened to Mr. Nash’s broadcast from Petone on Tuesday evening when he proudly claimed that the balance available. to New Zealand, after the payment of taxation, in 1935—immediately before the Labour Government came into power —was £70.000,000 as against over £200,000,000 in T.l-RL But he didn’t point out. that in 1935 New Zealand was just emerging from a world slump, that there was no inflation then and that the purchasing power of the £ was probably double that of today. Neither did he mention that, whereas in 1935 the £ was of value overseas, today it would not buy u box of matches. Yet, British, Canadian and American currency is good wherever it may be tendered. Why not give the full facts, Mr. Nash? —I urn, etc., JOHN CITIZEN. Wellington, September 22. '
