Teachers’ Salaries
Sir, —There is much talk by supporters of tlie Labour Party of the wonderful things the party lias done for the school teachers of the Dominion. We read in the Bible of a generation arising that knew not Joseph, and it would appear that a generation has arisen which knew not what the Reform Party did for teachers. It may confidently be said that the Massey Government improved tlie teachers’ lot more than any previous or succeeding Government. This one instance will serve: In 1916 the grade 2 teacher in Levin District High School received the munificent salary of £220 per annum —less superannuation—aud £o() wife allowance, if married, wifli a class on many occasions of 90 children. In 1926 this salary had been increased to £325 with £6O wife allowance, and classes were down to 45 and under. In this year of grace the salary is £2O less and the classes are no smaller. —I am, etc., HOWARD J. JONES. Levin, September 21.
