THE RACING WORLD

THE JOKER TO RUN IN CAULFIELD CUP

Kindergarten Arrives At Trentham (By St. Simon.) A special service message to “.(he Do* minion” states that The Joker had a smooth passage from Dunedin to T Lctoria and arrived in good condition. I lie Melbourne critics were not particularly impressed -by his appearance when lie arrived. He went on to Mentone after arriving in Melbourne, and is in the same box as Catalogue was on the occasion of his successful Melbourne cup mission. The latest known about his riding engagement, is that the New Zealander Mackie is not expected to be released to go over and ride him, and efforts will be made to secure the services of an Australian rider. It is intended to run The Joker in the Caultield Cup ns a preliminary to running him in the Melbourne Cup.

Kindergarten at Trentham. Kindergarten has arrived at 1 rentham and is now a member of P. Spratts team at Brentwood. The champion arrived m the best of health, though a tritie on the burly side, but it will not take him long to shed his surplus condition, and he should be ready for his first spring engagement, the Harcourt -Stakes, ou the second day of the Wellington spring meeting in October. Air. Fitzgerald has engaged -Spratt to ride the horse in Ins engagements this season.

Back in Work. , , -it n Ever England, who 1s owned by Air. c. E .Robertson, Wellington, and Mr. b. C. Sutherland, Dunedin, arrived from the south at the wekend, and is now a member of P. Spratt's team at trentham. Through having been used as a hack iu Otago Central during the winter, Ever England is long in the coat and very much in the rough at present, and will requ-te building up. It is to be hoped that this good galloper will measure up to pat racing. At present he is ou the schooling list and eligible only for hurdle racing. He is a quiet-natured beast and was Placed on the list not because be interfered with fields at the barrier, but because be refused to line up with his field, and thus bis supporters ‘‘did their money cold.

Left at Awapuni. After competing at (Marton on Saturday, Foxchase, a four-year-old gelding by I‘oxbridge from Senorita, was handed over to E. W. Watson, Awapuni, to be trained for his Auckland owner, Mr. W. Burn.

Coming Baek to Form, Carnforth finished out of & place iu tut Wanganui Guineas, but was well m the picture at the last furlong. His showing revealed that he is iu good condition and may not be far from winning form when produced iu the back grade.

Correction. , , The wording of yesterday’s note about Gulf Stream, winner of the Wanganui Guineas, made it appear that ho was a maiden. Tills is not so. Gulf Stream wou a two-vear-old handicap at Waipukurau last season. The point made in the note was that Financial, the runner-up, and Linbury, the third horse, were maidens. Drew a Bad Marble. e . There was good support in the Trial Handicap at Marton for Caelus, ridden by Morris, but she drew No. IS at the barrier, and that proved too much of a handicap. Caelus won a two-year-old handicap last season at Hastings in good style, and she looks forward enough to race prominently. She comes from the successful Hoy uuu* ily, all of which were good gallopers. They included Anomaly and Shirley, two ot the best performers of their time.

Needed the Race. . Nighean looked in need qt a race when she was produced for the Higgle Handicap at tMarton on Saturday. She was up behind the leading bunch early, but drifted with half the distance run. Nighean finished up last season with four wins lu line, and it may not take her long to regain winning form.

Macedoine Kicked. * Macedoine was kicked on a foreleg at the start of the main handicap at the Otago Hunt meeting and has not been to the track at Invercargill since her return,

Leading' Jockeys. . ,f. W. Jennings could not make the weight on Royal Flight in the sprint race at the Geraldine meeting, and this gave W. F. Ellis, last season’s champion jockey, his first win of the season. Broughton, who forfeited the title, to Ellis last season, has ridden five winners for the current season. He is headed only by Wiggins, who has ridden six winners, all from i\ Smith’s stable. ■ " '.X. Consistent Placc-gctlcr. Crucible ran four seconds and a third lu hack company last season, and her three starts this season have produced a second and two thirds. These planings have kept the Tiderace mare up in the weights, and on Saturday she was tried in open company in the Higgle Handicap, in which she finished third. Crucible runs honest races, but is not quite solid enough to win one. Leg Trouble. Kinnell did not fulfil his engagement at Marton on Saturday on account of a recurrence of former leg trouble. > Working Well. ’. One of the best workers at Hastings lately has been Voltaire, a younger fullbrother to The Monarch. Voltaire showed promise at two and three years, when he was placed in classic events, and he looked the type likely to improve with age. Another Attempt. , Among the entries for the Hawkes Buy meeting next week is the imported horse Royal Star 11, who has not raced in public since June of hist year. His last win was scored at Napier Park nearly three years ago. Royal Star II has never been a sound horse and for the past year has been spelling on his owner’s property at Hastings. Trainer Retires. J. Langford has retired from the position as private trainer to Air. D. M. Tweedie, Invercargill, and for the time being Mr. Tweedie is supervising the preparation o£ bis own horses. Langford was responsible for the training o£ most of the progeny of -Francolin, including the latest winner, Royal Flight.

Sislep to Broiveino. Mr. J. Somerton has claimed the name Broiedame for a full-sister to Broivelue. Eroledame is a big filly and is not to be hurried, her first appearance not being likely till the autumn of the current season.

On Easy List. Mr. T. Coltman’s three-year-old filly Theorist is on tho easy list at present through .clipping herself in a recent trial at Awapuni. Theorist, a half-sister by Theio to Free Gold and Pay Roll, showed a lot of speed in her only start last season as a two-year-old, wnen she finished fourth in a handicap at Tauherenikau.

Given Up Training. When Classt'orin raced at the Wanganui meeting she appeared in the race card as being trained by her owner, Mr. C. Boyd. 11. Thomson, who prepared her last seasou, has given up training to enter business in Fcilding.

Leaving This Week. L. G. .Morris is to relinquish training at .Awapuni this week and B. Grillitli, formerly o£ Hastings, is to take over. Griffith has a good team to start on, several of them being in winning form and otheru just coming to their peak. Back In Work.

Theoiateral. Sterling Lad and Alethea, all good performers last csason, are back in work at. Awapuul after spelling during the late winter. > Looks Improved. A Christchurch report states that John o' London looks harder in condition foilowing his third placing iu the John Grigg Slakes at Ashburton. lie stretches out well when galloping, and is expected to lie the best o£ the Riecarton three-year-olds this season. Moved Quarters. The Heddou Bush trainer, F. J. Boyle, will make Invercargill his headquarters for the next two months. His team comprises Platform, Dash o’ Dublin, Filibeg, a three-year-old gelding by .SiegfriedSome Form, and another three-year-old gelding by Siegfried—. Some Breeze.
