WASHINGTON POST

Mr. Nash Explains His Position Reasons why he felt he should, if reelected, return to Washington, were explained by Mr. Nash when addressing electors at Petonc last night. During the next, six or eight months there would be four or five conferences to discuss various aspects of finance and trade, and New Zealand would have to be represented. Because of his holding portfolios dealing with many of the matters that would come up—food, finance, trade —it was natural that he should go. Details of a plan submitted by the British economist, Lord Keynes, for using idle credit balances to assist impoverished nations were discussed by Mr. Nash. He also mentioned a United States suggestion regarding the management'of the worlds currency from an exchange point of view. At all such conferences New Zealand would have to have representation. If returned he, as Minister of Finance, should attend them. It was also necessary for this country to find some measure to determine the value of its currency in relation to other countries. An international conference would be held to deal with this. International airway traffic would be another tijiliject of vital importance. A voice: Keeping to the left and right. (Laughter.) The relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction of the conquered countries would have to be tackled. Mr. Nash said that if he returned to Washington he would spend eight or nine months there, a month or two in the United Kingdom, and one or two months in New Zealand. “Then I will come to the Hutt electorate and tell you what the position is. I hope you will give me the opportunity so to act on your behalf.” (Applause.)
