Sires In Australia

Australia probably is the only country in the world where the male line of Musket Is still striking an effective blow. This year the champion sire is Spearfelt, who descends in tail male from Musket, through Spearhead, Spearmint, and Carbine. Spearfelt stands at the Alma Vale Stud (where Mr. Standfast is also at service) aud up till the close of last season his progeny had won £183,461 In stake money. Though a winner of the V.K.U. Derby and St. Leger, the Melbourne Cup, the King’s PJate (two miles), the Governor’s Plate, and many other good class races, Spearfelt was neglected by 'breeders when retired to the stud in Victoria, aud was sent up for auction at Randwick where he was bought by Mr. T. Jennings for 1300 gns. for the Alma Vale Stud. In Queensland he has enjoyed an unbroken run of success as a sire, but this is the first, occasion on which he has headed the sires’ list for Australia. Last season his progeny won £25,000. an excellent performance in view of the restrictions on racing in the Commonwealth. The 10 leading sires for the season are as follows: —

£B2(KS. Gaine Carrington (by Hunting Song) sired IS winners of -16 races worth £4301, and Christopher Robin (by Phaiaris), now’ in New Zealand, was responsible for 10 winners of 23 races worth £3267.
