BACK TO TOWN HALL
Last night's political meeting at the Wellington Town Hall and the Junior Red Cross rally on Saturday afternoon were the first gatherings to be held in the main hall since the big earthquake of August, 1942. Interest in the rehabilitated structure centred on the maze ni tubular steel scaffolding, which mounts 40 feet above the western gallery, where the workmen are still employed in connecting the last of the strengthening piers to the now steel reinforced girder which runs the full length of the western wall. This job will be completed in a few days, when the concrete will be poured into the boxes prepared for it at these junctions. Plastering work will then follow. The huge travelling gantry —which resembles a gargantuan meccano fabrication —cannot be completed till after the present week, because of the meetings being held in the hall. Already the track has been laid along the eastern gallery. This gantry will enable the repair and painting ofthe ceiling to be done in sections, iv;thout tilling up the whole of the space with scaffolding. From the present evic.enee the work of eompli'ting the repair ami rofieuoralion ol* (he Town Hall should be completed about the middle of December, possibly soon enough for the 50th presenta Hon '.»j “The Messiah” by the JCoy&l Wcllinirtou (’hnrnl Union.
